Copy for a real estate broker's
brochure:

| This
broker wanted to communicate that she was family and
community oriented,
that she received an education from a prestigious university, that
she was knowledgeable in real estate, and that she was successful
and caring.
Here is our final draft.
MEET SARA JAMESON!
Educated at the University of Virginia, Sara has brought
Southern charm to
Wellesley Hills and seasoned it with just enough Yankee know-how
to get the
job done. She and her husband George, a local real estate
attorney, and
their ten-year-old daughter Kim are the quintessential Wellesley
family,
right down to Charlie, their Labrador Retriever. George coaches
girl's
basketball; Kim attends The Wellesley Hills Middle School, and
Sarah, prior
to making a total commitment to Real Estate managed to find the
time to be
active in The Wellesley Garden Club, Newcomers and The Young
Women's Club.
Sarah brings the same dedication to work that she has shown to
family and
community. That is why she has created so many enduring
friendships through real estate. That is why
she
has consistently earned her profession's highest awards, awards
that illustrate not only what she has accomplished for herself but
what she can accomplish for you.

A
sales letter to be sent to potential customers |
|
Here was the summary we received.
The company that I've become a distributor for is
National Health Products. They have a superior line of weight-management,
nutritional and personal care products. National has it's own Medical Advisory
Board made up of medical experts, scientists and nutritionists, currently
conducting business in dozens of countries worldwide. What I would like to do is
send my letter along with brochures featuring all the products and an order form
to many businesses around the world. Hopefully, they will choose to call me on
my 800 number or will just place an order.
If they call my 800 number they can leave a message and I
will get back to them most likely the same day or the day after. Really I want
to be as warm as possible and make it as easy as possible.
This was our suggested letter.
Dear (Customer),
Not very long ago I started to use those remarkable
products from National Health, USA. I not only experienced a general sense of
well being, but everyone noticed the difference in my figure, and my skin tone.
I have always had an avid interest in good health and nutrition, so it was quite
natural for me to fall head over heels in love with the National Health line of
products, and to become one of their many dedicated distributors.
And National is not just the name of a line of fabulous
weight management, nutritional and personal care products. It is an
international support system with it's own Medical Advisory Board; a public
company with more than fifteen years of experience and expertise; a company with
a foundation dedicated to helping "at risk" children, a company with a
heart and a soul. Imagine how great it is going to feel when your business
starts spreading the good news with this fast selling line of stay healthy
products.
My job is to make it easier for you to learn all about
the National family of products, and to show you how best to get the message to
your clients and customers. That is why I have included brochures and order
forms with this letter. In addition there is a toll free 24 hour number which
goes directly to me. If I happen to be out when you call 800 123 1234, you can
be certain I will get back to you shortly.
Here is wishing you good health and success with National
Health.

A
letter asking for a personal interview to take a survey |
|
Here was the summary we received.
I am a consultant and have been contracted by George
Stanton, CEO of The Employee Benefits Corporation, to conduct a customer service
survey via personal interview. I have developed 10 open-ended questions. I need
a letter to send to the interviewees introducing who I am, what I am doing and
for whom. I also need to tell them that I will be calling within the next week
to schedule a time to interview them briefly. I want to stress that my client,
Mr. Stanton, is assessing his customers to better serve them.
Laura Davies
This was our suggested letter.
Dear Customer:
My name is Laura Davies, and I am an independent
consultant. George Stanton, the CEO of Employee Benefits Corporation, has asked
me to design a confidential survey that will help him understand how to serve
you better. He and I know that the absolute best way to acquire useful
information about your needs is simply to ask you what you want, and what you
need.
That is why I have designed 10 straightforward questions
about customer service. The answers to these questions will help Employee
Benefits Corporation to be a more effective provider of group employee benefits,
and by so doing, will make your operation more efficient as well.
I will call you during this week to schedule a time for
the purpose of taking this mutually beneficial survey.
I look forward to meeting with you.
Sincerely,
Laura Davies

inexpert English into effective communication |
| The
received letter
This letter was actually received by
one of our staff. Only the names of the companies involved
have been changed. It is an example of how an attempt to
write a warm and friendly letter in colloquial English can
go totally wrong.
